Make putting things back part of the task

A small closing step for the objects that tend to collect on your desk or counter.

Editorial sample — awaiting final review.

This sample describes an optional routine, not a tested behavior change.

Choose one recurring item

Pick something you use often, such as scissors, a charging cable, or a notebook. Start with that item instead of trying to reset the whole room.

Find a reachable home

Place it near where you use it. If the intended storage spot requires moving several other objects, choose a simpler spot.

Add a closing step

For example: after wrapping a package, return the scissors before putting the package by the door. The example is a suggested sequence, not an author's personal experience.

Change the spot if needed

If the item keeps landing somewhere else, consider that location a clue. A different home may fit the task better.
