File names that make sense later
A simple naming pattern for documents you want to find without opening every file.
Editorial sample — awaiting final review.
This review sample proposes a naming pattern. The examples are invented filenames, not actual records or evidence of results.
Pick the details you search for
Choose a topic, a date if it matters, and a short description. Use only the details that help you identify a document. A draft shopping list may not need a date.
Use one repeatable pattern
Try the pattern date — topic — description for dated documents. For example:
- 2026-04-12 — home — shelf-measurements.pdf
- 2026-04-15 — project — meeting-notes.txt
These dates belong to sample filenames; they are not publication dates. Choose a separator that works on your device.
Rename a small batch first
Start with a folder you use regularly. Keep the extension, such as .pdf, unchanged. Check that the renamed files still open. Avoid changing filenames that an application relies on.
Keep the rule visible
Write a one-line note at the top of your folder or in a nearby document. When a name feels unclear, revise the pattern rather than adding more unexplained abbreviations.
